Default Bad HP! Poor Customer Service

I recently purchased a brand new Compaq Presario S6500NX. The
operating system loaded on the box is Windows XP Home Edition. It is
also loaded with lot's of trial ware. It is also loaded with lot's of
adware and spyware, including the evil backweb. I formatted the hard
drive and reinstalled my own copy of Windows XP Professional. Needless
to say my old copy of XP didn't have any drivers for the onboard video
of my new computer. I went to the HP web site to look for the video
driver. They had the soundcard driver, but no video driver. I opened a
trouble ticket from the web site. The following is HP's response:

"I see that you would like to have Windows XP professional driver for
the system video."

"As the drivers are not available online, you can try ordering
Presario Software Enhancement CD for the system."

More information was given regarding how to "order" this CD. The
information was useless as I was NOT able to order a Presario Software
Enhancement CD by calling the number they gave me. My reply to the
email message was sent days ago and no response has been given.

I can't believe in this day and age a national company would not make
all hardware drivers for the most popular Windows operating systems
available for free download over the internet from their support web
site. It is even harder to believe hey would hold the drivers for
ransom. I don't remember this kind of cheap extortion racket being run
by Compaq before they were aquired by Hewlett Packard. I say, "Shame
on you Carly Fiorina for allowing your company to get away with
providing such poor customer service". I hope that anyone that was
thinking about purchasing a Compaq or Hewlett Packard computer will
think twice about it. If there are any lawyers our there interested in
sponsoring a class action suit, I'll bet there are plenty of
plaintiffs available.

OK, I agree it is bad that they are not online (Dell's always are), but
where do you see a class action suit? It's not like there is some obscure
law that they have to give you a driver CD.

You see, they were all in nice directories on the hard drive that you, cough
cough, neglected to back up before you blew them away.

Our society is sue-happy.

I understand your frustration but I think its fair to say that Compaq has
seldom supported its users with drivers for OS that weren't shipped on a given
model. Sometimes its possible to go to the device's manufacturer's web site
and find drivers that often work, or to find them at drivers.com

Since Compaq never made a representation that I know of that they would support
additional OS, I doubt that your situation would rise to viable class
action--something I have a little experience with as a class representative for
defective PCs against Compaq that took five years to settle. I think that some
PC manufacturers do a better job of providing various drivers for optional OS,
or at least links to them, but I don't think anyone can hold them accountable
for failing to do so. Other than not to buy from them again.

Sorry, but that's my opinion. I'm certainly no fan of Compaq, but to be fair
they are only guilty of not going the extra mile to support folks like you.
But, hey, I'm no lawyer--stranger actions have got to a settlement....

It gets to be too hard to support. They offer a reasonably reliable software
base and expect you to stick with it. Its the only cost effective way to be
able to provide support for hundreds of thousands of PC's. It has to be a
known quantity. If you are an advanced enough user to warrent running XP,
you were really stupid to buy a presario.

Here is an analogy... you are ****ed off at your car maker because you
decided to paint your car a different color, and they dont offer seats in a
color that goes with the new paint job.

Boo Hoo...

If i had a dollar for ever usenet post that said " lets all sue compaq
because they wont support our changes to thier supported configurations ", I
would have a loooooooootttttttttttttttt of money.

Where did you see that WinXP Pro was supported? Anywhere?

If you wanted XP Pro so badly, you should have bought an Evo. Corportate
machines will come with WinXP Pro and will be supported for that. Then
again, you do pay a bit more for that.

Your "class action" has nothing to stand on. As your signature implies, Just

Don't assume that HP always loads the drivers into a directory
somewhere on the HD because they don't. They should be bound by law
to provide you with "backup" cd's because you go through hell and back
when you unpack a system and the HDD is bad from the get-go or a user
has done something irreversible;-)

FWIW, Dell's online driver support is the best you will ever find
ESPECIALLY working for a large organization but most users have the
cd's laying around thier desk when you get there.
