Help - computer fails to start
could be the PSU or the power button is stuck in?
"webmaster" wrote in message ... System is an AMD 2Ghz with XP home edition installed. This started after the wife turned the computer off whilst in screensave mode. Not sure if that is relevant but just thought I would mention it. It now tries to start immidiateley I turn the isolating switch at the rear and on the power supply to "on". Previously I had to turn that on and then the normal power switch at the fron before it would start. I have disconnected the HD, removed the graohics model and sound cards and the memory. I should now have it start continuse running and then beep since there is no ram installed. It doesnt. It runns for a few seconds and then shuts down. I did have the virus the other day but that was patched and I had run two or threee virus likkers after and never strayed out from behind the firewall after - and virus checker ! I suspect the power supply but am not sure. I dont want to go and buy one and find its the motherboard which is my next guess. Any ideas would be welcomed Kind regards Nigel Smith |

You can almost bet the farm that the switch on the front of the case is
either shorted or stuck in the on position (the effect is the same). The reason why is the fact that the system shuts down after a few seconds (4 or 5 would be my guess). The systems today will shut down if you hold in the switch button for about 4 seconds so a bad switch looks like the place to start. Regards, John O. "webmaster" wrote in message ... Easily tested - disconnect the front power switch from the motherboard and see if it still starts up when you turn on at the main power switch. Regards, John O. "webmaster" wrote in message ...
