Motherboard for Optron 144 with AGP & DDR slots?
I'm looking at getting an Optron 144.
I've got an X1600 AGP card and 3 stick of 512MB PC3200 memory. And a 600W power supply, 1 SATA & 1 PATA HD and a DVD burn & a DVD player. What would be a good motherboard for overclocking? |

What would be a good motherboard for overclocking? Life would be a lot simpler for you, if you used a PCI Express video card. There are some AGP motherboards, but some of them have unlockable clocks (so PCI/AGP clocks rise when the CPU clock is increased over 200MHz). Others are missing necessary features, like the ability to change Vcore to any great extent. I believe Gigabyte made some Nforce3 S939 motherboards, but I don't know anything about them in terms of feature set. You can look for more possibilities, by selecting S939 and AGP, in this search engine. (I don't know how many of these are still being manufactured.) I got 59 hits, by using "S939" and "AGP 8X" external graphics: http://www.motherboards.org/mobot/index.html Note that not all brands are mentioned there, as the Asrock 939Dual-SATA2 is not listed. I believe that board has limited Vcore. http://www.ocworkbench.com/2005/asro...emodguide2.htm Paul |

Motherboard for Optron 144 with AGP & DDR slots?
I haven't used your particular combination, but I liked an Asus A8V Deluxe.
(The A8V-E Deluxe is a PCI-Express board.) www.newegg.com doesn't list it at the moment, but the A8V is the it lacks mainly the third-party SATA/PATA RAID controller and the Firewire port. The Via K8T800 Pro chipset appeared to be a good one, even though Via has a reputation for dicey chipsets. I'm not sure that it would be regarded as a good overclocker, but the AGP/PCI locks are supposed to work on the newer revision of the board. I ran a 4400+ X2 at a (manual) 10% OC, quite reliably. I didn't do a lot of testing, but I don't think things were reliable at 20% with a Thermalright XP-120 heatsink. I think that using DDR DIMMs is not recommended (1 is OK, but only in a specific slot), but I doubt that's unusual for Socket 939 systems, which are intended for dual-channel use. Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn. "Tod" wrote in message nk.net... I'm looking at getting an Optron 144. I've got an X1600 AGP card and 3 stick of 512MB PC3200 memory. Was thinking more of AsRock with ULI chipset.

This one, maybe?
http://www.asrock.com/product/939Dual-SATA2.htm Asrock boards tend to be budget products, but this one is supposed to have good performance (competitive with an nVidia nForce 4 board), as well as supporting both PCI-E and AGP graphics cards with full performance. I have no idea how overclockable it may be, though. "Tod" wrote in message nk.net... Was thinking more of AsRock with ULI chipset. "Bob Knowlden" wrote in message ... The only thing that was required for a good overclock was fast ram. |
