Default Static Crackeling on Soundblaster live recording?

I am recording guitar & vocals using a soundblaster live 5.1 card,
cool edit pro & an audiobuddy preamp on a 466 mhz computer with 256
RAM. I get static & crackeling (sort of like an old LP record) whether
I record through my Sennheiser mic or feed the output from the
electric guitar straight into the preamp. There is no static on the
silent part of the recording before I start to play.
Thanks for any suggestions.
