Stereo PC crap [AKA: digital domain audio/visual]
Swapped out one of two ASUS Xonar's, I have, in duplicated models.
Seems I managed to break the primary backplane stereo/quad (archaic: duplicity) over various two-amp configurations, as well as in mixer-board blending. Anyway, I went to S/PDIF in TOSLINK laser-carrier modulation. Which doesn't mean much until one enters a wonderful world of DAC converter chips for transposing potential subtleties between one form of stereo output, conventional RCA jacks, and a professional (Alesis-brand industry proposal) regard for laser S/PDIF. I've never messed with the copper-pin connections, I'll presume no less equally endowed, at least in final form, for a however "cabled" S/PDIF [in]output. Thing I noticed with the ASUS soundboard, software configured for 2-channel only, is a higher measurable decibel output;- that does not mean, however, that the laser TOSLINK is disabled (it's a native two-channel decode, anyway): Rather, both sound measurably closer again to signal parity. A more of recent operational characteristic that may indicate none, if any, distinct characteristics to software switching the ASUS output "sampling" rate to 92K (of an available 41 and 44K selections). That small boost in volume could mean there's no signal difference between 3/8" RCA jack and TOSLINK output. My DAC converter, now a couple years old, I will now diverge into. I noticed a high-volume to a fast signal pre-amp stage for signal saturation, that there's a discernible hum going on. The short of it, is I ordered another, purported both with simultaneous analogue "headphone", as well as active engagement of the TOSLINK. Looking at the older unit, I found a headphone jack I'd never used. Plugging both into the mixer, the headphone output was a solid hum;- there's a cross-interference, going on there, that's leaking miniscule noise-hum into the S/PDIF carrier. Of course, the suggested solution is one ready defrayed to the preamp stage, that amps' volumes be accordingly lowered to compensate for any hum for a fixed and effective, which it is, noise-floor. My issues with this state, so far, is I haven't yet introduced a final dual-stage to the premap, namely, a four vacuum-tube array buffer last and prior to both solid-state speaker ampifiers. I've both JAN and Soviet tubes, and the Soviet tubes I've discovered to be especially clear, nuances in their clarity in how instruments come through. Software processing helps, although not as much as the proverbial golden-ears for identifying when clarity is sensitively a matter easily encroached upon by minute adjustments to signal-pathing strengths and resulting artifacts of distortion then added into what is best given from successive encodes to a proposed master recording. I've, as yet, neither a desire to forgo the highest Xonar sampling rate of 92K, nor the optical TOSLINK (I modulate from a hardwire chain to DBX compressor unit). And those tubes - perish the thought: They not be close to a class-A tubed amplifier costing $3000 - but they do significantly impact a mere A-B, in absence, listening test to either a proper vintage, heavy-iron Carver, or the hybridized modernistic, stage-shift into a Crown class-D amplifiers I'm running. All the "good stuff" fit both for a budget, but of course, over hardly a century worth of monaural recording scientificity, between Brian Wilson, Paul McCarthny, stereophonic engineering, now for me to appreciate. Hopefully, that is, so as to appreciate from a cleaner DAC provided, viz: Neoteck DAC Converter Digital SPDIF Coaxial Toslink to Analog Stereo L/R RCA 3.5mm Jack Audio Converter Adapter with Optical Cable for PS3 XBox HD DVD PS4 Sky HD Plasma Blu-ray Home Cinema Systems Oh, yeah...bring it on. Grand Total: $13.05 |
