Burned DVD's won't play on any other drive
I have about a dozen DVD's I burned recently which contain video files, all
Windows Media Video/Audio format. All the burns were good, the disks were all finalized, and all disks were checked with data verification in Nero 6 Ultra. I checked three of the disks at random on my other drive, a DVD only drive, in the same system. They played just fine. That was a couple of weeks ago. Today I popped one of the disks in the DVD drive (not the drive they were burned in) and Windows Media Player wouldn't play any of the files on the disk. It hung up and froze my system. It reported the disk as damaged or otherwise unplayable. I opened Windows Explorer and tried clicking on one of the files in there. My system was immediately frozen. I tried playing one of the files on the disk using Divx and my machine was instantly frozen. I took the disk out of the DVD drive and popped it into the DVD/RW drive it was burned in, in the same system, and it played just fine. It would appear that I now have about 53 GB of files I can only play on one drive. They won't play on the DVD/CD-RW drive in my laptop either. This is not good. Not good at all. Does anyone have an idea as to why this has happened? -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |

Most likely this is an example of a very low quality burn and a degrading
disc. Suggest you replace them immediately if the files are important. "Kevin" wrote in message .. . Burned DVD's won't play on any other drive
Wait about two minutes after putting the dvd into the other machines. In
explorer click on view as a thumbnail. The good videos that work will turn into a thumbnail picture. The videos that won't play will not turn into a thumbnail picture. Wait about 10 minutes the disc may be borderline if you wait long enough they might all show as thumbnails. Make sure there is no fingerprints on the burned side of the disc if there is rub them off. If they all show as thumbnails the disc is good and should play on all your computers. If they all transfer to the hard drive the disc is also good. "Kevin" wrote in message .. . Can't figure out why for the life of me. It's installed and running fine on my desktop, which is the system I used to burn the DVD's. What's the brand of the discs? Are you using Office Depot brand? What's the speed rating of the discs and what was the burn speed? I'm using Imation branded disks. DVD-R 16X, 4.7 GB capacity (single layer, single sided) blanks. Three of the 12 blanks were burned at 4X --- but the other 9 burned at 16X. Those were the only speed options available in Nero Burning Rom at the time of the burn(s). Of the hundreds of files, only a handful were in a format other than Windows Media Video/Audio. I'll have to look at all the disks again to see where these other file types (.avi, .mov, and .mpeg) wound up. They may have been on the DVD's that burned at 4X. . ================================================== = Mike Richter - the Slimiest Lying Friggin SOB (UDF) ================================================== = The slimiest lying friggin SOB Mike Richter has been for YEARS blaming the UDF -- to weasel out the bugs of DirectCD: ------------------------------------------ UDF is a fragile format UDF is an unreliable format the format is very fragile and unreliable The format is bad - it loses data The fault is not with the software but with the format There is an inherent problem in UDF Packet writing is the same as UDF. I'm going to check the disks in a friends machine as well. I usually wait until I see the drive activity light on the optical drive go out before I open Windows Explorer or Media Player. I tried using Divx as well and that did not work either. If the file did open in WMP or Divx, it would play for about 10 seconds then totally freeze the system up. "Kevin" wrote in message .. .
