Default USB Devices

I have a Dell Inspiron 9100. This has four USB 2.0 ports.

The problem I have is that when plugging in a USB device(USB - serial,
printer, mouse, etc.) the device installation appears to be port
specific. When the device is plugged into a port other than the one
which triggered the original installation a new installation starts.

For example when plugging a usb - serial cable into port 1 COM 9 is
created - fine, however when plugging the same cable into port 2 COM10
is created - not fine, as serial hardware needs to know the COM port
number.

Does anybody have a solution to this please.

TIA

Martin

If the devices are running properly, this should not be a problem.
Windows and the bios routines are very complex, and automaticaly
assign the best possible combinations for the devices, and systems.

The way that this works is fairly complex. If you start to do a search
about how USB, parallel, and serial ports work, you will find a lot of
technical information abou these.

I have the same problem with my l'espion digital (keyring camera) and
my Lexmark Z42 printer. They both re-install in put into different USB
ports. Very anoying. I have you to find a solution except ensuring you
put them back in the same socket.
