Not really since the parts are pretty much non-interchangable. There are
companies that sell kits or the loose parts to build certain "whitebook" models. Twinhead is one of the companies that come to mind that do this. |

In short ... no.
Desktop PCs can be custom built and configured at home because they use standard case configurations, form factors, etc ... Laptops do not really adhere to any standard for construction. Open any two ATX desktops from different vendors (say, an HP and a Dell) and you will find the components and connectors in relatively the same configuration. Open two laptops from the same two manufacturers and you will find two completely different designs. Processor, RAM slots, drives (and hence their connectors), will all most likely be in different places. And, unless things have changed since the last time I was inside a laptop (I admit it's been a while) the processor is not socketed, but soldered to the board. The only generic components that will work with any laptop would be SODIMM RAM (in most cases) and 2.5" hard drives (granted BIOS support for the particular drive capacity). At best you can buy a "kit" which contains all of the hardware (some of which, no doubt you can customize) to build one yourself. But the lack of expandability and flexibility of hardware configuration makes building a laptop only good for the experience ... it doesn't offer the advantage of selecting components based on performance as compatibility becomes the major deciding factor.
