SB Live 5.1
Cant get any midi files sound. there is no eroor when I play them. I am at
loss to see where the setting may be already switched off?

Check ALL the mixer controls just in case the midi synth is muted. Check the Control Panel/Sounds in all the sections to check the correct playback device is selected.
