So what is it about Safe Mode...
..... that seems so difficult to sort out?
I have a ASUS A7V-E-ACPI BIOS REVISION 1003, 23/07/2001 and since a bad shut down the pc (1000 mhz) has been running at 100 mhz according to the bios. The mouse is very slow and jerky and things are taking longer to load. I have looked at posts in this forum and not found solutions as such. I've downloaded pics and instructions from ASUS and reset the jumpers but no change. Restoring the bios defaults makes no difference and switching to manual settings for cpu speed has a restricted range 100-200 mhz. Somebody out there must have some other ideas??? |

Try looking in Device Manager for anything that isn't working/has broken drivers (yellow "!" or red symbols). More info reqd tbh - eg what CPU is in there? There is nothing wrong with the cpu speed range (actually FSB (clock) range) selectable in the BIOS. Normally set this to 100, 166 or 200MHz, depending on CPU.. -- Rob |

With no more info than you've provided, I'd guess that 100 MHz. is the correct BIOS setting for your chip. Note that this is the bus speed, not the CPU speed. The CPU speed is developed from a multiplier "X" of the bus speed. Given a bus speed of 100 MHz and a multiplier of 10 (quite common) that would yield an effective CPU speed of 1000, which you claim to have. So I'm guessing that you have no issues, per se, with BIOS and the problem lies elswhere. You need to be more descriptive about the details of our system and exactly what you problem is as well a outlining ALL the steps you've taken to resolve the problem. We can guess that you've already restored "Default" settings in BIOS, what else have you changed in BIOS?. From your post I assume you can actually boot all the way into windows and when you do get into windows that the performance of your PC is somewhat less than you expect it to be. I don't get the reference to "Safe Mode" in the subject of your post. I think you are both right and that the original error message about the bios loading in safe mode in response to a poor shut down (and it was the bios and not win xp) was corrected with the bios defaults and that what the bios calls the cpu speed is the bus speed. I noticed this too when I clocked it up a notch and the pc identified the cpu as a higher spec than before in four digits. Yes, the slowness is then something else altogether.... |

It sounds like you destroyed your motherboard. Time for a new one.

He has to remember what custom settings he was using in the BIOS, review the settings in the BIOS, and correct them, to get back to where he was. The fact that his machine boots, should tell you it is "not destroyed". Paul |
