Default USB limitations under Vista

morning,

My desk is in "U" shape, computer being on one side,
printer, scanner, camera being on the other side,
while the "bottom" is used as the front desk......

USB cable is then "very long" between the two sides,
a 5 meters piece extended with a 1 meter pieces of cable.
(I know it is out of the standard)
ending wit a USB powered Hub, then another pieces of 1 meter cable to reach
each peripherial.

It worked perfectly for years with my Dimension 8400,
but that one lately died.
I bought A XPS 420 with Intel Core duo @ 3.00 Ghz
and Vista !!!

Problem now......!!!
scanner not recognized,
printer working ½ de time,
while camera can connect only 25% of the time.

Very problematic to change disposition of everything.

What are my alternatives ?
have searched for USB "extender", but found only USB1, so very slow......

would a powered USB hub in middle of the road help?
or is it only a kind of splitter ?

Thank you very much for any idea / solution you may bring to this very big
problem to me,
and sorry for my english.

Daniel

Default USB limitations under Vista

Daniel,
1. Did you go to all the USB devices manufacturer's websites, and make sure that
these devices are compatible with Vista?
2. Did you go to all the USB devices manufacturer's websites, and make sure that
you installed the Vista drivers and software for these items?
3. Make sure if you connect things like USB Hubs, cameras (some cameras), and
printers to your PC, that connect them to the rear USB ports, not the front
ones. Sometimes the front ports do not provide enough power to the USB devices
connected to them.
4. Check on the Dell Support Driver page, and make sure that you have the latest
drivers for your PC.

1, vista sucks
2, vista sucks
3, just buy any old powered usb hub if you suspect that's the fix for
your problem, they are 'extenders'

oh, and vista sucks, did I mention that?

I'd be inclined - as a first step - to try each of these devices on a short
cable to the PC. If that doens't fix it, it *may* be a PC/Vista thing. If it
does, you are fighting the USB distance barrier. But until you determine which
is the cause, further resolution isn't possible.

Default Forgot to mention !

Have installed latest Manufacturer Vista drivers

scanner and camera working perfectly if connected closer to the computer
(1 meter cable - USB hub - 1 meter cable - peripherial) (needed to be
powered by USB....)

but why was it working for year
and now sensible to distance ?

Well, if you have ruled it down to distance, you don't have many options.
One would be to put the items closer or, as you said that you have a
U-shaped desk, run a cable between the tops of the U. Get a cable cover to
keep it in place and covered. The other option would be to buy a powered
USB hub and to keep it in the middle (near the bottom of the U). However, I
would venture to say the problem is the patched-together cables. If you
have one long continuous run, that would be better than smaller pieces
strung together. Each connection point would severely limit remaining
distance.

Hi!

It worked perfectly for years with my Dimension 8400,
but that one lately died.
I bought A XPS 420 with Intel Core duo @ 3.00 Ghz
and Vista !!!

What you have just discovered is that some devices can tolerate
working outside of specifications and others cannot.

It seems that the older Dell hardware was of somewhat better quality
that what is being sold today. The newest Dell system I've seen (an
Inspiron desktop) was full of generic hardware. The older systems
tended to use Intel-designed motherboards.

What are my alternatives ?

Do some troubleshooting. It is not unreasonable to expect that your
USB hub may be broken. Is it powered with a power adapter, or does it
rely on the computer for power? If it has a power adapter, does it
work?

Shorten the USB cables as much as possible. Connect the devices
directly to the computer for testing purposes. See if they work
reliably at that point. Move the computer--could it go in the middle
of the desk instead of at a corner?

Using a powered USB hub with that many devices plugged into it would
be a requirement. The power limit from a USB port is 500mA at 5 volts
DC. You will lose some of that due to unavoidable losses in the
cabling. Some boards will provide (quite a bit) more, and that is
another reason why your previous setup might have worked while your
new one does not...the Dimension 8400 may simply have been able to
supply enough power to keep everything happy.

I agree. I'm looking forward to the announcement of the Microsoft
