XP update stopped supplying any new updates in 2014.

This is a manual update. You have to D/L and apply yourself.

A new build of XP should be able to get any updates that were
available except for this one.

Ah. Well, WU should still connect in IE8 though. Grr!

negative. unsupported browser now, definitely will not work.

suggest wsupdate to get the bulk of the updates and should
download everything normally after that.

http://download.wsusoffline.net/

note. some of them won't run under Windows 10, script length
error of 192.

you'll have to use a diff OS.

He will need 05.05.2014 Version 9.2.1 (Hashes, AV check).

That is the last one for XP - and yes it still works. The
resulting .ISO is a little over 2GB.

What about Windows Update service? I am not getting any offered updates
for days so far.

Open that broke-ass copy of Internet Explorer and enter this:

http://www.update.microsoft.com/wind....aspx?ln=en-us

instead of this

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ --- broken...

And the interesting thing is mine doesn't even show KB4012598 (SMBv1 patch).

HTH,
Paul
