Can't format CD-R [DLA]
I've searched through the forum, but haven't found a thread that was
similar to my situation, so hopefully someone here can help me. I've been trying to burn some data onto a CD-R, but for some reason, it won't let me. When I insert the disc (which my driver recognizes), I right click on the drive and select "Format" (underneath, the "Use with DLA" option is selected. When I try to uncheck it, it won't let me). I then get a message telling me that "Write-once media (such as CD-R, DVD-R) is not supported by this version of DLA." The burning fails when I try to use Nero, and failed as well when I dragged and dropped the files in the drive. I currently have a Toshiba Satellite laptop (M35X-S149), and I have Nero installed as well. This means I probably'll have to uninstall Nero, right? But why is it that I'm able to burn audio CDs, and VCDs, but can't burn data? I'd be happy to provide additional information, if needed. I just need to get all this data off my computer! |

I may be wrong here but I don't think you have to format once only media. The whole idea being, I suppose, if you formatted it you would be kind of writing to it. The format option would be for rewritable media. so, ignore 'format' and just drag and drop data to your blank disk (assuming you have winxp?), or burn a data cd with nero or whatever and see how it goes. -- Paul (And I'm, like, "yeah, whatever!") ------------------------------------------------------- Stop and Look http://www.geocities.com/dreamst8me/ |

Hi Paul, thanks for your help, but I have tried dragging and dropping the data to my blank disk, and it will go through the process, but at the end, tells me that something went wrong during the burning. It's puzzling, especially since it used to work for me before! I haven't installed anything that might've interfered with it, I don't think. |

Conflict with Nero software ------------------------------------------------------------- If Nero disc mastering software is installed on your computer, DLA will not recognize blank discs. The work-around for this conflict is to temporarily uninstall Nero's software. Nero products do not affect DLA's ability to read discs containing data. The burning fails when I try to use Nero, and failed as well when I dragged and dropped the files in the drive. Do you drag&drop after opening Nero? smh, I actually uninstalled DLA, and now
I can drag & drop, then burn the files. However, it doesn't seem to like my TDK CD-Rs very much. It keeps telling me that there's an error, but when I use another no-name brand, it burns fine. Any ideas why? |

That's not that altogether unusual. It seems some burners are particular in media "taste". The usual (lame) remedy given is to upgrade the firmware. What burn software are you using now to do the drag&drop? Are you on winxp and using the winxp built-in burn function to do the drag&drop? If Nero is still installed, burn with Nero and when you get the error, post the error log. My sony just ignores some but it's not as bad as the burner which came in my machine. That one just did what it felt like when it felt like. I use the windows drag and drop for cd data as it is so easy. Simple enough. If you're using Nero, you presumably have InCD installed. That will format erasable discs, but not write-once (CD-R). Formatting is used for packet writing, which is what you appear to want to be able to do. So you have at least the following options: 1. Use an erasable (CD-RW) - not recommended for reliability 2. Use a different packet program - one supporting variable-length 3. Don't use packets; master your data Mike -- http://www.mrichter.com/ |
