Default A dying very old HDD confirmed?

I ran smartctl's long test and waited about an hour.

I got this e-mail in the beginning of the test:

Date: Sat, 19 Apr 2014 09:55:41 -0700
From: root root@MyLinuxBox
To: root@MyLinuxBox
Subject: SMART error (SelfTest) detected on host: MyLinuxBox

This email was generated by the smartd daemon running on:

host name: MyLinuxBox
DNS domain: [Unknown]
NIS domain: (none)

The following warning/error was logged by the smartd daemon:

Device: /dev/sda [SAT], Self-Test Log error count increased from 0 to 1

For details see host's SYSLOG.

You can also use the smartctl utility for further investigation.
Another email message will be sent in 24 hours if the problem persists.

Default A dying very old HDD confirmed?

Oops, I used the wrong parameter to show smartctl results. I also ran
GSmartControl v0.8.6 for its GUI, so I could watch its ETAs and
percentage in real-time. 2/Two more short tests passed twice so far.
2/Two more long tests failed. It looks like it only got to 40% of the
long tests done? Here are the latest results:

Its certainly got some reallocated sectors and just one each

it to say that its dying unless those counts keep increasing.

Really?

Yeah, a few reallocated sectors are no big deal on a drive
that old. Some of those older drives don't handle mains
failure that well and can produce a bad sector that way
and then just reallocate that bad sector.

Hmm. I will keep my compound eyes on it then.

How come it can't complete the long tests though?

Dunno.

It only gets about 40% done and then fails. Isn't that a bad sign?

I don't test drives like that, just watch the
bad sector numbers to see if they change.

Yeah, a few reallocated sectors are no big deal on a drive

failure that well and can produce a bad sector that way
and then just reallocate that bad sector.

Interesting. I did not know that.

Hmm. I will keep my compound eyes on it then.

I wonder if Linux/Debian will keep notifying about them daily like
this morning.

Dunno, I don't use that much so can't say about that.

We'll see...

OK. So, I am just looking at "6" value to rise to be concerned.

How come it can't complete the long tests though?

Dunno.

That is what concerns me. If it can't finish it, then something is going
bad?

Default A dying very old HDD confirmed?

Hello,

Rod Speed a écrit :

Yeah, a few reallocated sectors are no big deal on a drive
that old.

However having Current_Pending_Sector or Offline_Uncorrectable = 1 is a
bit more annoying. It means that the data inside a sector is currently
unreadable and the embedded disk controller was unable to reallocate the
failing sector. In short, it means : data has been lost. Not too good
for a backup drive.

AIUI Current_Pending_Sector means the controller hasn’t had the
opportunity to reallocate yet, not that it’s tried and failed. But yes,
any reads from affected sectors can be expected to fail.

Oh, another thing:

Not too bad if they don't keep increasing.

Normalized SMART values decrease towards failure.
