Default Reliable external HDDs?

Hi,
Got a mate who wants a reliable external HDD to share between Mac and
PC.
Can anyone recommend one that doesn't have crappy cooling that's going
to kill the internal drive eventually? Odie, if you're around, are
there any that you don't hate?
Ric

Odie advised me about an external h/d.

He steered me clear if branded ones, says they have inadequate
cooling.

He advised these http://www.span.com/catalog/ people for some decent
kit. He also likes Seagate h/ds.

I got an external case with a 300G Seagate.

I have -
1, 160gb Lacie porsh, died within 3 months.
2, Maxtor, 80gb and 160, had the 80 for about 2 years no probs and no
probs with the 160.
1, Western Digital 250GB, no probs.

I like the WD best for no other reason than the case. The case is bigger
then the others and looks well ventilated. Oh yes, nearly forgot, it has
an on/off switch, the Maxtors do not.

Well we use 20 or 30 LaCie 250 gig drives at work.
We've also got a couple of the big 1Tb ones.
These things get HD video files thrown about day in day out, and none have
failed after a year.

Buy a Safecom external box and stick in a HD.

You can get them for whatever type of drive you like. Be warned,
though, that the SATA variant is so badly designed that it is all but
impossible to screw the disk to the enclosure.

These boxes are really just lumps of aluminium. They do have fans in
them, but with so much metal around them they do not get that hot.
Indeed, I have disconnected the fans with no ill effects. Probably
better cooled than a disk sitting alongside others in a PC.

I've been using a flycase (black, litle unit but don't know the exact
model)) enclosure with a laptop harddrive. IIRC you can just get the
case alone then put a drive in it. It was 2nd hand when I got it. I
carry it in a ruck sack on the motorbike, chuck the back in the corner
when taking it off. Its taken some pretty good abuse and still goes
strong. Mind its only a 20 gig laptop drive though so its not fast.
Doesn't have a problem with heat, certainly doesn't feel like it gets
warmer than the ambient temperature of the room.

Has good access controls and runs 24/7 on my network. It's ideal for
me.

The OP may want to have a look at the Pleiades range at Span
http://www.span.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=20_32 not cheap but good. I
have a LAN/USB2 version with a Seagate.
