Default HP 420 problem

Hi folks

I know this printer is almost antique but as it's here I might as well
try and get it going. It'll do a test print without any problems (apart
from not always picking up the paper) but when I hook it up to a PC and
try to print something the orange led flashes to tell me it's out of
ink. I've done the usual contact cleaning and changed the pcprinter
cable but no joy. I've swapped the cartridge with a working one from
another printer without any luck. I could understand it if it wouldn't
print at all but to print a test print okay but not anything from the PC
confuses me!
