Gaming Laptop
DrHibbert wrote:
I need to upgrade my gaming PC, and I'm looking at going mobile (Laptop) which can handle all the new and upcoming games etc, Also one of the big components I am looking for to improve performance is the 7200 rpm HD. I have been looking at Alienware Area 51 Laptop, Does anyone have an Area 51 Laptop from Alienware and how do they compare to a desktop machine in Gaming Performance, Temperature (I am having significant temp problems with my current AMD desktop atm). How does Alienware rate with stability or can someone recommend something better in around the same price range (Or even cheaper but with High quality and gaming performance)?? DrHibbert Check Sager for a version of the Alienware laptop, AIRC. When you buy a "gaming" laptop, that laptop is designed for gaming as you know it *today*. Tomorrow, you might find that your requirements have changed, but your laptop will in all probability not be fully upgradeable; i.e., you're stuck with today's expensive hot tech with a non-existent or limited upgrade path. One year from today, the upgrade path, if any, will have vanished, if history is a guide. Heat is an issue with all P4 laptops. Some have better/worse heat pipe cooling/fan combos than others, and when the CPU and GPU are both working their little hearts out during gaming, the heat issue is by far the most extreme. It is becoming apparent that most P4 laptops do not show any effects of extreme heating (random shutdowns) until months after purchase when the cooling channels/heat exchanger/fans become fouled with fibers, fur, hair, dirt, and pizza. Correcting this requires frequent blowback with compressed gas dust cleaner (starting from day one of ownership); or, typically, disassembly to remove debris. Having worked through the cooling problem on several P4 laptops, I now strongly recommend that if there is a Pentium M laptop with a suitable graphics adapter, you investigate it carefully. The newer series of PM chips are every bit the equivalent of the P4, IMO. OTOH, you can get the same gaming equivalency in a desktop for probably less than half the price of the laptop if portability is not an issue. As you know, keeping up with new tech is far easier and cheaper with a desktop, and far cheaper yet with a console. Q |
