I've seen a fanless one with metal mesh sides and stupid blue cathode glow
tube, but I'm hoping to find a basic plastic one. So far, all are fan
types. Anybody know if what I'm looking for exists?

You won't find one without a fan. Without the fan, the drive will overheat and
fail. The metal cases exhaust heat through conductivity.

I appear to have found one thru another poster's (diff. group) suggestion.
Ordered and on the way. Crossing fingers.
Theoretically one SHOULD be able get one.
Only the newer hotter 7200rpm drives should need a fan IMO.
I have a couple old laptops that didn't have fans at all, and they of
course had hdd's.
I'm going to get a 5400rpm drive to put in it to be safe.
They are getting hard to find though, as it seems "the more heat the
better, we'll just ad more fans" as far as components these days.
Course, all these devices are conspicuously devoid of dust filters for
these fans. I guess the more internal dust the better too.

Weeell, this is a beauty. I found it, ordered it, and it got ripped off!
I tried to order another, and now they're discontinued or out of stock.
F!!!
Anybody know of another?
These were Quick-Serv ones. They had 3.5" and 5.25" ones, USB2, Firewire,
or both. Pretty cheap too, and nice offwhite.
Now they've been replaced with, you guessed it, SILVER ones. ARG!!.. must
resist rant, must resist rant.
Ok, so anybody know if the new ones are still fanless and plastic?
Tried calling vendor but they know nothing about anything, and won't
answer email at all.
I can't get a site or # or anything for the manuf.
Anybody have one, or know of another manuf. that makes something similar
to what slipped through my fingers?
