Help! My cdrom keeps disappearing........
Hi everyone--ok, here's my problem. I have a emachine that was running
win98. The other day I took out the cdrom physically, then removed it in the device manager. When i put a new (creative) cdrom drive, the os did not detect and install it. so, after horsing around with the cd and drivers a bit, i went in the bios, changed the startup option to boot from cd, and booted from a win2k disk. win2k is now installed. oh, by the way, i have the cdrom as a master on it's own ide channel. well, the bios sees the cd, but whenever win2k boots up, the cdrom is not there, and i have to go through the add hardware wizard, which loads the driver for the creative, and everything works spanky until i reboot the computer, at which point the cdrom has disappeared again. i have tried resetting the bios to original configuration, running the "detect ide devices" in the bios, and changing the cd jumper to cable select. i need this computer to detect the cd on it's own. what am i doing wrong (emachine aside), and how can i fix it? thanks a bunch, ken |
