Default moving HD to another computer

Six months ago, I unplugged one of my computers. Now, after I plug it in
and push the button, nothing happens.

I'm thinking of moving the HD (with XP Pro on it) to another computer.
What should I expect? I heard that Microsoft has some kind of
anti-piracy scheme that would prevent Windows from booting up if the
motherboard is changed. Is that true? Thanks.

Depends on how drastic the change of hardware is, the original
Windows in a new box might throw a fit, particularly if it needs
new drivers. It may ask for the install disk so it can find the
drivers it needs.
If you finally get it to work, this may be "after a fashion"
and not as good as a clean install onto a newly formatted
drive.
Tried it myself, it wasn't over successful.
But go ahead, you have little to lose, if it fails reformat
and do a clean install.
If you want to preserve data on the original drive
back it up to DVD or get a cheap external drive.

It will either work fine or you may have to do a repair install using the XP CD
before it will boot if the chipsets on the two motherboards are different enough.

Nope. You may have to do a manual authorization after a
repair install, but MS will be happy to do that in your situation.

It's very likely that you couldn't boot, but that has nothing to do
with anti-piracy scheme...

Quite simple, if you don't have the exactly same chipset on the other
computer, you can't boot... Prepare to install WinXP from scratch...

You dont have to do that, a repair install will fix the
failure to boot and you wont lose any files or settings.

Good luck.

Dont need any luck, it works fine.

Only if you have an authentic MS$ install disk, this
will offer a repair option. If the HD you are moving to another
box is from a Dell, HP, or other system with a customised
recovery disk, then it'll throw a fit and start asking for
an MS$ install disk with a drivers.cab, etc.
Back up any valuable data for starters, you may be
in for a bumpy ride.

Doesnt have to be authentic, a copy of one will work fine.

Or its much more likely to work fine.
