Compaq 12XL401 Touchpad Problem

Friend of my wife brought over her older notebook where the touchpad no
longer works. It seems her husband installed an external USB mouse and
since the touchpad stopped working.

Anyway I have tried all I know - which is not much... :-).

The machine is running WinME. Under device drivers the touchpad had a
yellow exclamation next to it.

She could not find any driver disk for the touchpad so I DL drivers from
the Compaq site and installed. No change.

I next went to the Synaptics site and DL the TouchPad drivers they had
listed and installed.

The exclamation point no longer shows but the touchpad still does not work.
When I open the setting for the Mouse in Control Panel the Tab for Touch
and Scrolling shows Synaptics TouchPad Properties - Version 5.0.80 20Jun00
No Devices Present.

The listing in Device Manager under Mouse shows:

HID-compliant Screen Scroller
Synaptics PS/2 TouchPad
USB Screen Scroller
