Win '95 had a habit of losing the CDROM drive, and the 'given' solution at
the time was to load real mode drivers.....
BTW It was a Microsoft issue, not a Compaq only issue.

Hey Dale - thanks yeah I did try a CMOS reset last night, and sure
enough, I got my hard drive back!

My top four list to fix weird PC problems.

Reboot
Re-install
Reset CMOS
Replace CMOS battery

Some other good suggestions have been offered about the lost CDROM....

Dale

OK just when you thought it was safe....things keep getting weirder.

So after a couple of days (and not touching anything) the CD-ROM
starts being detected again, but can't read anything (nasty mechanical
noises when I access the drive). I removed the data cable from the
drive, and everything's OK.

Picked up the bigfoot drive, and it died in my hands while it was
running. Now nothing gets it spinning again. Strange because I've
been holding it while it's been on a lot over the past weeks!

Replaced the bigfoot with a newer quantum, all fine, except now it
won't even boot from floppy. It seems to start, takes a few chugs of
the fdd heads, and just stops, light stays on, PC goes nowhere, with
no on-screen output. Subsequent CMOS resets have no effect.

Getting crazy with this now...am I missing something obvious, or is it
time to try a new controller?

My bathroom is pretty small, but I can just imagine.

Kudos, Dale!

CDROMs usually don't have a drive type. They are detected on boot, and the
windows drivers take over. Check the cable and the jumper settings, if the
bigfoot is jumpered for cable select, and the CDROM is jumpered for cable
select, try putting both on the primary controller.

Scanning the HD for virii would also be in order.....
