Vista and 7 - what considerations should I be aware of if going to them?
Thinking about getting an ebay copy of Vista or 7 for a gaming rig.
What considerations are there that I should be aware of? -Will service packs be automatically available like they are with XP? -I see conflicting assessments about Vista for gaming - it's crap, no it's not it's great once you install the latest service packs. Thanks for all input. |

Thanks for all input. At this point in time, the support for Windows 7 will last a slight bit longer, than for Vista. Windows 7 is just Vista, after it's been properly debugged. http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifeselect Release Mainstream Extended (security patch) Windows 7 Home Premium 10/22/2009 1/13/2015 1/14/2020 Windows Vista Home Premium 1/25/2007 4/10/2012 4/11/2017 I can't understand why anyone would have an interest in Vista, then or now... Just for comparison, this is the line for Windows 8. The real question will be, if Microsoft makes enough changes to libraries (Windows Blue or later), will a user really practically be able to hold onto Windows 8 until 2023 ? Microsoft wants to introduce a subscription model for OSes, and that starts with Windows Blue. And that can only be "compelling", if new libraries are used to wean users off their old OSes. I read some mention of them doing something to replace .net, but don't have any details. http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/?p1=16799 Release Mainstream Extended (security patch) Windows 8 Pro 10/30/2012 1/9/2018 1/10/2023 HTH, Paul |

Thanks for all input. Vista and 7 are more recent than XP, expect better support. I've never run Vista, my 7 box has no problem with updates. |

From Win3.11 thru and including Win7 one could buy various versions (home, pro, OEM etc) of those, but Win8 is not available for that; only as an "upgrade" and only for Win7. Oh yes, if your HD dies, you are screwed: no disk to install from. All of the others, one can install as often as needed. And there are only 5 attempts available,so for a family of three,if the HD dies, tough sh*tsky you all - M$ will NOT support you;you are forced to buy another subscription and start from scratch. |
