Advertised as refurbished (but nameless), it proved to be a Memorex 8x
machine which is likely to be worth the $56 price (plus tax and

By "recently" I mean that I've opened the box but not yet run the drive,
so all I can offer is externals. For various reasons, I did not take
advantage of a similar offer a few months ago for a discontinued but new
Plexwriter at $62, though I would have preferred that to the one I
bought now.

Buy a 5.25" external enclosure and fit it with a burner of choice. If
DVD burner, Firewire is recommended (but not mandatory if you don't burn
at top speed). (A rule of thumb is 8x max DVD on USB 2.0.)

Lite-on for cd-rw; NEC or LG for DVD.
