Default 120GB WD is removable media?

I've got a WD 120GB drive that XP home thinks is a removable media drive.
The box is a P4VMM2 with a 2.4 GHz P4 and 533 FBS; 544Mb of 266MHz Micron DDR memory; new M/B; new 400 watt P/S.
Before any changes, the HDD acted the same as now. Boot from CD, go to repair console and try to format the drive. Message
is that I can't format removable media.
Anybody have any idea what is going on?

what is your drive configuration? Are you sure your not pointing to
the ROM? It would be pretty hard for XP to do that, although nothing
is impossible. Is the bios seeing the drive?

Yes BIOS was seeing the drive.
I'm pretty sure the drive failed. When I started this, I could fdisk and format the drive. It since has failed format
several times and BIOS has refused to "AUTO" find it.
I've swapped a smaller drive into the box and it seems to be working fine.
The WD is about a year old but was bought as part of a system. I'm not sure if I can return it against the WD warranty.

there is usually a date stamped onto the drive. If its within 3 years
its under warranty for most newer WD's
