Default Thunderbird and Firefoxnew releases don"t work

Today (12/20/2006) both releases from Mozilla don't work.
Thunderbird 1.5.0.9
and
Firefox 2.0.0.1
They don't run under Windows XP.
I had to reload both previous program releases to connect to the
internet and connect to the internet and/or read mail.
Anybody else have similar problems?

The mozilla groups:
news://news.mozilla.org/mozilla.support.thunderbird
news://news.mozilla.org/mozilla.support.firefox

I saw a few reports of Firefox 2.0.0.1 not working, and others reporting no
problems with it. Suspected culprits were corrupted file downloads,
autoupdates rather than full new installations, an older Win98 (pre-SE)
system...
