OT? Internet Security for my Dell 2400
Looks as if I may have to give up computing. I can only afford DIAL
UP, which is not conducive to the 'startup' downloading of 90MB's of anti-virus definitions...as PC TOOLS requires Apple is MUCH smarter. "Intego" security software for Apple, offers the downloads, broken down into 5 different areas, so you're not online for hours and hours, only to be knocked off line, for whatever reason. If someone offered that for DIAL UP PC's? WOW!!! Any suggestions? I asked PC Tools, but they said to have a friend on broadband do it for me. What friend would load the behemoth PC Tools on his PC , then download 90mbs of definitions , then transfer it over to my PC, or burn it on a CD, then erase everything from his computer; I haven't seen any friends like that in years! And I don't have family. Need suggestions, please? |

It's just A/V but works well with dial-up and it's not a huge download. |

Back on topic..... do you have a laptop with a wifi card? Then you could go to a place offering free wifi and download on a flash drive. Or if you don't have one, can you find a friend to do this for you on a flash drive? Another alternative is to use a software based download manager with a auto-resume feature so you can stop and continue as you please till you get the entire download. |

Microsoft Security Essentials is only 12.4MB.http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/ I tried MSE and it is problematic updating on a slow connection. I had to remove it. |

Hi!
Looks as if I may have to give up computing. I can only afford DIAL UP, which is not conducive to the 'startup' downloading of 90MB's of anti-virus definitions...as PC TOOLS requires Surely not just AV definitions, but probably also program updates? Apple is MUCH smarter. "Intego" security software for Apple Uh, hahahahahahahahaha. *All* anti-virus software for the Macintosh royally _hoovers_. (As in the vacuum cleaner.) Apple has nothing to do with the Intego product. If someone offered that for DIAL UP PC's? WOW!!! That's merely intelligent software design, not a catering to dial up users. I'm sorry to say that whether it is right or wrong, the connected world is leaving dial-up users in the dust for the most part. This is wrong in my book, but when there aren't very many left, what do you do to convince people of that? Other AV software vendors do have such options for resuming an interrupted download. Sometimes they even work. What friend would load the behemoth PC Tools on his PC , then download 90mbs of definitions , then transfer it over to my PC, or burn it on a CD, then erase everything from his computer; I haven't seen any friends like that in years! And I don't have family. You wouldn't do it that way. Chances are good that PC Tools has some standalone updaters that do not require installation on the other computer. You merely download the ones you need from another PC, save them to some sufficiently large storage media and there you have it. Although again, I agree...that's not a convenient thing to be doing regularly. Need suggestions, please? Change AV providers. Not sure how feasible this really is, as large updates are going to happen with almost any product. Anyone you know still also on dial-up? What do they do? What would your Internet Service Provider recommend if you called or e-mailed them? If they have any amount of dial-up customers, I'll bet they would have an answer. William |
