Default Catalyst CLI insists on connecting to the internet?

Perhaps my firewall is overly cautious, but if internet access to CLI is
blocked, the Catalyst Control Center (5.9) won't load.

Probably one of the quirks of .NET. It could be as simple as going online to
check for updates, or reporting anonymous usage statistics. If paranoia
takes over, just use the Control Panel version.

If you disable the firewall but pull the plug at the NIC or modem, does CCC
still work?

No doubt part of the conspiracy with Microsoft - they give ATI the
xbox contract only if ATI forces every PC owner to download the
obnoxious bloat that is .Net :-).

Indeed. Like lemmings into the ocean.

Wait til Vista hits the streets next year.

Get your checkbooks ready for subscription fees, and lots of them.

For the CCC. Without .Net CCC won't load. And possibly other stuff, I
dunno. All I know is if you want to use CCC, you need .NET.

..NET makes Catalyst Control Center extensible, so tweak utility authors like
Rage3D can write a "plug-in" that integrates into the main control program
with relative ease. Plus, .NET is a buzzword, so CCC acts as a checkbox
feature for OEM appeal.

Just use the regular Control Panel version of the drivers if all this seems
like a load of BS. Remember, you have a choice. Exercise that choice before
it gets taken away...
