stupid PC needs reset to boot
I have an old Core 2 PC, which I have been keeping because it has
a software package that can't be transferred to another machine. Now when I turn it on, just hear the DVD drive grunt. No beep, no monitor, no keyboard lights. But if I then hit reset button, behold it will boot okay. Tried removing CMOS battery and setting up BIOS again - no effect. Looks like another case where some transistor has died and stops it booting when powered up. |

Turn it off from the back from the power supply's main PWR switch. Wait awhile and turn it on from the back again. Do the same but add pulling PS plug from the wall. Disconnect DVD, hard disk. Try bringing it up again. Got an extra power supply to try on it? Like Flasherly suggests, trying a different power supply is worth a try. Also based on the age of the machine I'd be inclined to visually inspect for bulging or leaking capacitors on the motherboard. Some motherboards display this kind of problem when the motherboard battery is starting to die. Replacing one on a machine that is over 4 years old is usually worth the effort since the batteries life expectancy on these is usually around 5 years. |
