I would think if someone was on the road all the time a USB type
Internet would be cool. It may even be enough entertainment.

It would be nice if local TV stations would offer their stations to
the Internet so someone on the road could get local news and shows
straight from the laptop.

Local TV stations broadcast over the air for free, I wonder what extra
costs would be involved in broadcasting over the Internet. After all,
the goal is to reach as many people as you can to try to sell them as
much useless junk as you can.

A few stations do offer their service on the internet. However,
advertisers have not seemed impressed with web numbers. Basically, if
a station can't count a viewer, it doesn't need that viewer. Only
local programming could be offered, as networks generally do not allow
net usage, except their own. For over the air TV , one can always plug
a tuner to their computer, not too expensive.

Note: alt.tv.tech.hdtv removed in my reply since it doesn't appear to be
a group focused on television content streamed from Internet sources.

Wifi has been around a long time and there are lots of wifi hotspots to
find when travelling. Your hotel, resort, bookstore, cafe, or other
travel spots already have them. You don't need to lug around a USB
dongle to connect to some cable/wired service to a wall jack somewhere.

It would be nice if local TV stations would offer their stations to
the Internet so someone on the road could get local news and shows
straight from the laptop.

So why not visit their web sites to see what content they offer there?

Local TV stations broadcast over the air for free,

No they don't. They lure revenue by providing a venue to proliferate
ads to their viewers. The advertisers pay for your viewing.

Google still works:
http://www.google.com/search?q=%2Bte...+%2Binterne t

There are also some sites where you can stream movies to your host, but
you're stuck with their library of films which isn't always that great
(but the same goes for whatever broadcast/cable/ITV decides to spew out
at you). One example is http://www.hulu.com/.

Why? Seems pretty compact to me.

One end is for a computer and the other end is for cable or antenna.
Neither of which should be for "on the go"
