OptiPlex GX 110 Tower
Just picked one of these up from a co-worker who was doing some house
cleaning. Surprisingly--for a system sold in April 2001--it still shipped with Windows 98 SE preloaded and a Dell Win98 COA on the case. It needs a good dusting but is otherwise immaculate. It presently has a single 256MB PC133 DIMM installed. My guess is that being Intel 810E based, it will only accept a low density DIMM to get up to the 512MB RAM size limit. Anyone know for sure? The onboard 3Com Ethernet is a nice touch. William |

Hi!
Crucial.com system checker ? Their "three steps" website process shows they don't carry anything for this system, and the only thing it does confirm is 1.x USB support and a 512MB ceiling. I am not able and do not want to run the system checker for a few different reasons. William |

I am not able and do not want to run the system checker for a few
different reasons. Fair enough - Belarc Advisor then ? - it can be done offline. |

Hi!
Fair enough - Belarc Advisor then ? - it can be done offline. I'm not opposed to that, if any halfway recent version still runs on Windows 98. :-) However, it will be a lot simpler to just crack the cover and pop a DIMM in to see what it does. Knowing the history of the computer, I wouldn't dare attach it to my network. William |

Hi!
I'm not opposed to that, if any halfway recent version still runs on Windows 98. :-) Windows XP Professional. In 256MB RAM. I booted it up and every time the desktop appeared, it rebooted. I suspected blue-screening as the cause and the hardware seemed OK after a few cursory tests. So I hooked the disk up as a slave in another (healthy) computer, where I scanned it for viruses. So far we're at 59 (different!) threats/viruses/malware/spyware/garbageware. Talk about being run into the ground. William |
