FSB and PC3200 memory question
hello
my config: Athlon XP 2600+ (barton - 1.91GHz) 2x512mb Corsair PC3200 Asus A7N8X-Deluxe default: 166 FSB, 11.5 multiplier I'm trying to raise my FSB in small increments to play with OCing a bit. However, if I go over 166 FSB (default), I get a "system failed memory test" and I have to reset the board to get back in. I have Corsair PC3200 .. running synched .. friggin expensive when i bought them a year or two ago ($180 each chip!) Does anyone know why I'm getting these errors? I thought PC3200 was rated at 200... Why am I getting errors when I push the FSB above 166? There is a very strong chance that I'm missing some vital piece of information - I'm not completely retarded, but fairly new to OCing, so please, help if you can! I can raise the multiplier as high as 12.5, but I'd rather boost the FSB in increments .. i think. thanks!! dxtx |

Possible you've got a flaky module or memory hub. Try yanking one module at a time and o/c to find out. If it's still flaky running either one, I'd suspect the m/b. |

Before you start pushing voltages do some thorogh testing. (See my posts in this group, find "googoff") Try running memtest86 at std clock rates to make sure the mem chips are sound (I guess they are but its a very good test ) Its more likely that its AGP or PCI that is going out of spec or may be one of your PCI cards that cant handle it. You should be on 5:2:1 devider in case you're not already. Its best to strip you system down to a minimum if you want to do some serious testing. Just keep your hard drives and gx card. You can do your basic setting up without even running Windows. That way you limit the number of vaiables and poss causes of error. Put the system back to normal for final testing and fine tune afterwards. HTH |

Is your chip multiplier locked?
Maybe your 2600+ is at its limits? Otherwise be bold and go for 200FSB 10.0x mulitplier and see what happens. |
