Default Correct Power Supply Help Needed

I need to go shopping for a new power supply and would like some
advise please. I want to get a namebrand decent one and I am confused.

I have an Asus P4B533 moboard ICH4 Chipset Socket 478
1 gig of RAM
two large IDE drives

I am having the perverbial boot problem prior to POST. PC just goes
on for a second and back off agin. I've checked everything I've read
here and I do believe the power supply is the culprit. My current one
is generic 300W.

Can you advise me please what wattage to purchase and what is a good
brand name for me to look at.

I am a bit confused by the moboard manual which says it has "dual"
power supply connectivity so you do not have to change power supply
when building a new PC.

I am not building a new PC but I do need to know if this is a strange
plug of some sort.

Also do I need to get an ATX power supply?

Thank you, Donna

Hey Donna,

Heres some power supply advice.

1. buy name brand, such as antec, spi, enermax. I personally use
them all but for a good price the SPI (Sparkle Power) is the best.

2. At least 300 Watts. But thats not the most important part. If
you look at the label on the power supply -- at least newer ones --
you should see something like the following

(+3.3v & 5.0v = 175W max)

this is important because most of the components in a computer runs
either on 3.3 or 5 volts. therefore, the higher the value, the better.

3. As for that strange plug thing, I wouldn't be too worried about it.
I'm betting that plug is the 4 point power plug for the motherboard.
Just remember to check that the power supply you buy has mentioned on
it somewhere "P4 Ready"

Thats it for power supply advice. As for your problem, you sure its
not a short in the system?
