Maxtor 250GB hard drive problem
Got this one for free since it "doesn't work" according to previous
owner. I plugged it in and all I got was repeating "twang... twang..." noise. BIOS does not find the hard drive and some heavy duty diagnostic software failed to find it as well. Including Maxtor's own software. Mfg date is April 2004 so warranty expired. Busted logic board? -- When you hear the toilet flush, and hear the words "uh oh", it's already too late. - by anonymous Mother in Austin, TX Spam block in place, no emil reply is expected at all. |

That is very likely the drive recalibrating and never being able to read the platters. BIOS does not find the hard drive and some heavy duty diagnostic software failed to find it as well. Including Maxtor's own software. Because the drive cant start for some reason. Mfg date is April 2004 so warranty expired. You sure it only had one year ? Busted logic board? Most likely. Not always tho, there may not be any connection to the heads anymore etc. |

I checked with Maxtor for warrantly and entered the drive serial number and it was reported expired. Used to be they offered 3 years but oh well... Busted logic board? Most likely. Not always tho, there may not be any connection to the heads anymore etc. Probably not worth fixing without knowing where the problem actually is. If I could find an M-80 I could blow em up =) -- When you hear the toilet flush, and hear the words "uh oh", it's already too late. - by anonymous Mother in Austin, TX Spam block in place, no emil reply is expected at all. |

Most likely the heads have failed - assuming your "twang" is more like a "click" - if you could post a link to a recording I could tell you what was wrong with it. It *is* recoverable - but forget about repairing it for future use - absolute waste of time. Odie -- Retrodata www.retrodata.co.uk Globally Local Data Recovery Experts |

Unlike Toshiba, some symptoms with Fujitsu, certain problems with Hitachi, ditto Samsung, etc. How many recoveries do you perform each day? Do you actually know anything about data recovery? Please back up your ludicrous statement with some evidence. Otherwise keep your trap shut. You've dropped yourself in it by making a sweeping statement that a Maxtor drive is not recoverable. You clearly have absolutely no idea whatsoever. Odie -- Retrodata www.retrodata.co.uk Globally Local Data Recovery Experts |

Defiantly not "click" but more like broken spring sounding "twang" I'm not worried about recovery. The previous owner did regular backup and didn't lose anything more than a couple hours from last backup set. All I wanted was to see if it's practical to fix this rather than spend $100 or so for a new 250 GB. -- When you hear the toilet flush, and hear the words "uh oh", it's already too late. - by anonymous Mother in Austin, TX Spam block in place, no emil reply is expected at all. |

Actually repairing a HDD with _any_ kind of problem is not worth the effort unless you want the data. The disk should still be discarded afterwards. More cost effective to get a $5/hour job and pay for a new disk. Arno |
