I have X2 4400+ (overclocked) and single 7800GTX, no problem such as yours. Currently using driver 100.65. Areas to examine, not necessarily in order:- Overclocking anything ? Non-standard memory timing ? Reset ALL to default, immediately.... You might just have a memory problem. Do you notice ANY other oddities about your machine behavior ? Memtest or Prime 95 to weed out core-system or memory problems. I fully check my systems by setting up multiple concurrent instances of Prime95 in configurations that fully saturate all the CPU cores and all resident memory. Zero failures after at least 12 hours of continuous running is my pass-criterion. Marginal power supply ? How much current do you have available on +12V? A very common symptom is crashes during 3D games. Try downclocking your processor and/or your graphics card to relieve the peak current on +12V. If you get better stability the most likely culprit is the power-supply. Assuming that you were not overclocking anything to begin with of course ! You might have a corrupted driver install. Maybe use DriverCleaner to fully clean out any driver residue. However, read the DC instructions very carefully ! Thanks George "John Lewis" wrote in message ... I note that nVidia haven't updated drivers for pre 7***-series cards (for
example, 6800 GS/GT) on XP since Nov 1st. Was that the last we 6800 owners can expect? Also, since there are now separate version of the drivers for 6***, 7*** and 8***, should they be still calling them "unified"? nVidia has just released Vista beta driver 101.41 ( March 2 )
Well, it sure is Monday morning. I installed the
101.41 driver with no problems. The previous Vista drivers 100.59 and 100.65 refused to install at all .... error "No compatible hardware found". Couple hours on the phone to nVidia, and at first they claimed I must have on-board VGA that was interfering. but there is no on-board VGA in this test box ( Dell 9150 with 7900GS ). I was stuck with the Microsoft certified driver that has no OpenGL support. The latest driver, at least seems to be able to find its ass with both hands, but still there seems to be no OpenGL support. I got the same error message from MOHAA and AutoCAD .. "no OpenGL .. exiting". I don't really blame nVidia for this. Vista is truly a piece of crap. It is nothing but a beta, and at least I'm getting to hack it for a hobby. I think the nVidia "OpenGL ICD" is nothing but a software layer that is translating OpenGL calls to D3D. There's no way in hell nVidia restored 800 meg worth of OpenGL SDK to the Vista OS. So looks like the Engineering Industry is going to take a great big hit right in the pocketbook if they move to Vista , and then have to pay AutoCAD, etc for re-engineering their apps. As for MOHAA, I really like the MOH series, and I'm sticking with XP. Microsoft can take Vista and put it up their conniving butts for another 10 years. Oh yeah :-) AutoCAD reports that it is running at 5 frames per second under Vista. Ha ! That is your OpenGL translation to D3D. No wonder Crysis has been delayed almost a year. Nobody is that stupid. johns |

I have 41 6800GS cards in my AutoCAD labs :-)
And the "powers that be" are getting ready to shove Vista down my throat. Don't feel like the Lone Ranger .. my 7900s don't work under Vista either. My best tests say stay with the 8xx drivers for both under XP. Coolbits works ... .... custom resolutions work. Nothing much works under Vista without a lot of tweaking. Shaders still don't work, so games run fine but there is very little in the way of shadows. No OpenGL ... just a translation layer that is pig slow. johns |

Also, this drivers default fan speed is 40% or more.
That is crazy making. I downloaded nVidia nTune 5.5, which runs under Vista, and I could set my fan speed down while monitoring the GPU temp. I dropped it to 27% with only 1 degree rise, and now my fan is quiet. johns |

All AutoCAD need do is just recommend their customers to stay with XP... at least until the next major version of AutoCAD arrives. Just as Adobe, Matrox and many other 3rd-party developers are doing right now. Matrox has not even tested one item of their 3rd-party video hardware with Vista, and publicly advise their customers to stick with XP.So if your management really needs to run the current version of AutoCAD with reasonable efficiency , well just tell them the bad news... no Vista. But first contact AutoCAD and get the full details on the actual problem source from the "horse's mouth" and their expected upgrade path (and its timing) to full resolution. As for MOHAA, I really like the MOH series, and I'm sticking with XP. Microsoft can take Vista and put it up their conniving butts for another 10 years. YOU are whenever you warble about Crysis. Crysis has nothing to do with your OGL/AutoCAD laments. Crysis uses the Dx10 and Dx9 APIs.... and the appropriate video drivers. I thought you were going to the Game Developer's conference ? On right now. I even looked up Crytek's booth number for you. #484 in the West Hall. Please stop making an obvious fool of yourself by regurgitating baseless rumors about the Crysis schedule. John Lewis "I need my delusions of grandure" *johns* 12-Feb-2007 |

Please stop making an obvious fool of yourself by regurgitating
baseless rumors about the Crysis schedule. Having a small "crysis" of my own. I'm in my 5th game of Gothic 3 so I won't have to spend the next 8 months listening to limp-wristed talking heads in Oblivion. Crysis obviously went to ground because it is a dx9c game that was hoping to upgrade to the far superior dx10 and herald in the Age Of Vista. Only Bill blew it again, and now, Crysis is trapped between "we told you so" support of XP ... and crashing to the "latest and greatest" high-priced gaming Desktops of Vista. This means $$$-coders just sitting there with nothing to do. Will EA GAMES fire Crytek ? Will Grandma finally give us Far Cry 2 ? Will patch 1.4 ever be finished ? johns |
