On P5B Deluxe, why is Marvell Yukon 88E8001 etc PCI gigabit ethernet controller "unplugged"
In winxp, Local Area Connection (no number) Marvell Yukon 88E8001/8003/8010
PCI Gigabit Ethernet Controller is now reporting as "network cable unplugged". There is also a Local Area Connection 2 "Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller" that is reported as Connected. My lan and internet connections seem to be ok. What's the difference between these two, and why is one reported as unplugged? I don't think it's been like this since I set up this box (3 months) but I could be wrong. |

I installed xp brand new about a month ago, mine (also Marvell) says, 'local
area connection 3'. The other one, the one always disconnected, you can probably delete. -g |

Does the board have two network chips on it ? (88E8056 and 88E8001) If there are two LAN connectors in the I/O area, one is probably not being used. Paul |

Paul I don't know about the two chips question, but it does have two LAN connectors. I suppose it'd be safe to remove the one that shows as unplugged, but I wish I understood what it meant more. Just go in you're network connections and disable the one that is not being used that way it don't ask you to install drivers every time you reboot Thanks |

Thanks I don't think it can be made much simpler than "cable unplugged...". If you delete it it will be found again. Go into network connections and in the properties for the adapter you can hide the icon. Reading between the lines what you really want to ask is... "How do I get rid of the icon on the task bar?..." |

But it's good that it's apparently not something I need to worry about, thanks to all of you for helping out. |

LOL, apparently your motherboard has two Local Area Network adapters, you are using one for either your modem, or to connect to another computer. The other one is unused. Windows is trying to be helpful by telling you one of the LAN adapters is "unplugged" i.e. the unused one. I have balloon tips disables, because those taskbar pop-ups really are very annoying, so I imagine you are seeing a yellow balloon with this message every time you start your PC, or possibly at some regular interval (along with many others). These can be useful occasionally, but they quickly become irritating. Download TweakUI and you can customise some windows setting more easily, rather than wading through the services etc... |
