Default Compaq Presario 2100US won't boot after jack repair

Hi all,

I was following the methodology layed out in

http://www.howtofixcomputers.com/bb/ftopic127194-0.html

of repairing the common problem of a broken powerjack.

Prior to disassembly the laptop successfully booted from battery.

In addition to the jack repair I thermal greased the CPU (but didn't
remove the pad).

I disassembled more than I needed to as well (unintentionally through
misreading a direction in the manual), and with all said and done
ended up with some 'spare' screws after full reassembly.

Due to unfortunate timing the entire disassembly and reassembly
project was moved after disassembly which resulted in my screw layout
getting disorganized, a move to worse lighting and other things that
increased the challenge .

So observation

charge light is on - that suggests that the jack now works, and the
circuit between the battery and the jack works

the power light is off and I can't boot up

So the questions

1) could lack of a screw in a proper location cause the failure to
boot? Could a screw of the wrong 'color' cause a failure to boot (ie
there are silver colored screws and darker metal colored screws, I
suspect they have different conductive properties perhaps).

If so regarding color is their some resource that can tell me what
color is needed to go where?

2) would getting mineral spirit on the wrong part of the CPU be able
to cause my symptoms? I thought I was careful in cleaning of the CPU
but it is possible I borked something...

3) could I have 'cooked' something on the board with my soldering that
would give the indicated symptoms?

Any thoughts and suggestions welcome.
