Default Adjusting Sound on HSP56 micomodem

I have a Compaq Presario 5004US with Windows ME. I have tried to adjust the
modems connection sound by going to control panel and sliding the bar to the
OFF position and typing in AMT0 (zero) in the extra settings (advanced tab),
with no results what so ever. The sound is really irritating and loud. Any
suggestons?
