Dell Dimension 4600
Hi all - I decided to upgrade the power supply in my 4600 and was under
the impression it took a standard ATX power supply so that is what I bought. But when I went to install it, the connector that goes to the motherboard has more pins (24) than the existing power supply which has 20. I have been googling around and apparently you can get an adapter to convert it to 20 pin. Is this safe to do? TIA. -- Cheers! Jan |

It mat be unnecessary if there is room enough to let the extra pins hang off the end of the mobo socket. See docs here; http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...ov.htm#1084976 |

The 24-pin connector is typical of a BTX power supply, the new standard imposed
on us by Intel and other computer hardware movers and shakers. I think you ended up with a BTX power supply as a replacement by mistake. Take it back where you bought it and ask for a full refund... Four pins of the ribbon cable peeled off the side of the 24-pin connector and left a 20-pin connector that worked just fine, so I think your adapter would be fine. After taking another close look at it, I think that is how this one works too. I already ordered an adapter so might as well wait until it comes in. Thanks! And then another even closer look - lord I shouldn't try and do these things after work when I am fried. One side of the connector slides off to make it 20 pin. -- Cheers! Jan |
