Pentium D Vs Pentium 4 HT
Hi there...
I'm considering purchasing new system for jacquard designing based on CAD system using Suse Linux 10 retail version.. What could be best motherboard & processor.. I'm confused between Pentium D & Pentium HT.. Is there any real difference in performance of both of these? What could be better for CAD system? Will Suse 10 supports HT or Pentium D? If you can figure out good original motherboard from intel that works with Linux.. that will help me fiugre out system config. Thanx in Advance Ark |

Any linux based system like Suse will support both Pentium HT or D. It just
may require you to rebuild the kernel to support SMP. Between the two the pentium D will always have a better performance than the HT processors. There is also a Pentium Extreme edition which uses both dual cores like the pentium D and the HT technologies. The last thing you need to figure out is if your CAD software is multi-thread, ask the vendor, to actually utilitize multiple processors. Most likely it is for any major CAD software developer. As far as motherboard brands and linux, any stock motherboard from Intel that supports any pentium processor should run linux fine. wrote in message oups.com... Hi there... Thank you
CAD software supports Dual core processors. I'm just curious about processor because i don't know which one is better.. Thanks Again Ark |

If given a choice, go with the dual core.

Suse "supports" HT from v8.2, but several threads in discussinon on Internet concernig Suse, report problems (slowing down) with HT enabled. All sugest solving problems by disabling HT... There were some performance hits back in the early days for HT support, before the scheduler got smarter, I haven't seen any problem in over a year with HT performance. -- bill davidsen SBC/Prodigy Yorktown Heights NY data center http://newsgroups.news.prodigy.com |

A year or so back, I was asked by my wife to recomed server class PC for an SCO Unix/Progress system. The server is an IBM Dual Xeon, and had no problems with SCO/Progress. This year they decided to swith to Suse (v9.1) instead of SCO, and after installation, they ware unable to run system stable until they disable HT (as sugested by local IBM support)! I've not had a problem with Redhat or Kernel.Org kernels, but that doesn't mean there can't be some. Given the potential performance gain, I would still run HT unless I actually saw a problem. I posted last week a link to a web server report which showed 37% gain in tps using HT, and I regularly see 20% reduction in clock time on large compiles. You can always turn it off if there's a problem with the SuSe kernel. -- bill davidsen SBC/Prodigy Yorktown Heights NY data center http://newsgroups.news.prodigy.com |
