Default Old Dimension 8200 BIOS Question

Larry,

Do you have the latest BIOS for a Dell 8200? I don't know whether even that
BIOS supports HDs larger than 137 GB.

A03 is on the 8200 now the latest is A09. Trying to get all info before
Flashing BIOS (Which i hope goes well). Otherwise i think the only other
thing to do is install a new controller card (hope they still have them
out their for older systems).

I have A09 on the old 8200 I have. According to what I have read the
problem isn't in the BIOS

What OS are you using?

Well the gist of the conversation is that Dell says that the 820 doesn't
support drives over 137GB due to hardware limitations. BUT then one
person says that the limit is due to the OS, and that XP SP2/3 allows
the use of the drive.

I THINK that the problem is likely that the machine doesn't see over the
137 GB limit but with the later XP versions you can create partitions on
the drive to use the extra space.

Default Old Dimension 8200 BIOS Question

The Dimension 8200 will recognize a large drive properly with the
latest BIOS. Earlier systems (Dimension 8100/OptiPlex GX400, P3 based
Precision 220 tested for sure) also have 48-bit LBA support.

More than just the computer factors into this. Windows 2000 and XP
both need to have a flag enabled in the registry to properly support
48-bit LBA. You also need a service pack--SP3 for Windows 2000 and SP1
for Windows XP.

The Dell BIOS contains a workaround for the boot drive during Windows
2000/XP setup if it is a large (over 137GB) drive. Later, you will
need to edit the registry to enable the 48-bit LBA support, so that
other drives will be recognized at their proper capacity and you won't
experience silent data corruption.
