Default Scan - if you are thinking of buying, read this first

We purchased goods from Scan Computers in Bolton up until the middle of
last year.

We encountered many problems with their goods - remarked tray CPUs that
overheated and 80 pin SCA hard disks that our Scan rep admitted "will
not work in RAID arrays".

Exactly why will grey market 80 pin hard disks not work with PCI RAID
controllers?

This has culminated in a visit from a court bailiff to collect nearly
£2000. Scan has changed our address to obtain a CCJ against us -
without us being aware of any court hearings.

Full details he

I know scan well used them for many years, even before they moved to the
Reebok. We stopped using them as we had some problems, we were a small
buyer to them only 10k pa

Your story is frightening. You are clearly a high value customer, i'm
amazed you haven't been treated better. Scan got to big for their boots a
long time ago imo.

good luck m8
they look like stinkers to me
I've bought two sets of stuff from them - one was faulty and it took a LOT
of discussion with them to convince them otherwise. My 10 years in PC
build/manufacture didnt seem to convince them that I knew duff RAM when I
saw it without running a s/w program to prove it (PC boots without their
sticks, doesnt with). I even got a phone call from them when they received
the ram back to tell me that if they tested it and it worked, they would not
issue a refund. I said if they could make it work it would be a absolute
miracle. Two days later I got a refund. That put me off using them again.
Your story confirms that I made the right choice.

So what was their explanation?

There wasn't one.

The drives (Seagate in this case but we've had Hitachi from them as
well) were grey market stock, no doubt put into the channel from a
large OEM.

It's possible that Seagate's agreement with the OEM in question made
sure the firmware on the drives only worked with hardware from the OEM,
for example Dell, HP, IBM RAID controllers only.

Which begs the question, why was Scan selling them?

Not surprised, I got bitten by their 'returns' dept. I recall the OFT had a
long talk with them about their terms and conditions being dodgy. They
remind me of Watford Electronics another no-go area for me.
