Hi.

Is this error something to worry about quickly (will have to buy a new

This timing seems/appears to be related to my earlier reboot (did not
power off) of this very old 2005's Debian box due its yesterday's Kernel
v2.6.32-5-686 upgrade (not version, just its package with fixes). I had
no problems with the reboot (but wasn't looking at its screen though).

I ran its detail reports before doing an extended self-test:

Device does not support Selective Self Tests/Logging

So I decided to run gsmartcontrol v5.41 (GUI version of smartctl) and it
also marked Power_On_Hours as a problem. I ran a long test and it
started with loud noises (a fan/motor or something spinning?) for about
30 seconds. That doesn't sound good to me. Anyways, here is the report
after the long test which said no errors/problems:

Don't worry. This means the drive manufacturer thinks it is about
time that you buy a new one, but otherwise the drive is fine.

This is a pure uptime count that expires when a pre-set
usage time is reached.

You can add '-i 9' to the smartd.conf entry for this device to suppress
future warning mails.

Smartd reported the failed attribute because VALUE = THRESH:

ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME ... VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE ... WHEN_FAILED RAW...

Yes. Other attributes look good, even after 64880 hours (7+ years)
uptime :-)

Many recent drives return threshold 0 for Power_On_Hours and all other
usage ("Old_age") attributes which means that these would never "fail".

Nope, its an ancient drive which is still working fine.

(will have to buy a new HDD if it is urgent. but they are expensive due to Thailand's flood )?

Thats varied significantly world wide. Mine havent
even gone up 10% for some reason, 2TB samsungs
and the cheapest 3TB drives around.

All of that is it just saying those values have changed. No big deal.

This timing seems/appears to be related to my earlier reboot (did not power off) of this very old 2005's Debian box
due its yesterday's Kernel v2.6.32-5-686 upgrade (not version, just its package with fixes). I had no problems with
the reboot (but wasn't looking at its screen though).

I dont believe its significant.

I ran its detail reports before doing an extended self-test:

Device does not support Selective Self Tests/Logging

So I decided to run gsmartcontrol v5.41 (GUI version of smartctl) and it also marked Power_On_Hours as a problem.

Again, its just saying its a VERY old drive, no news.

I ran a long test and it started with loud noises (a fan/motor or something spinning?) for about 30 seconds. That
doesn't sound good to me.

May just be the power supply fan.

Anyways, here is the report after the long test which said no errors/problems:

Default "Failed SMART usage Attribute: 9 Power_On_Hours."? (thanks!)

Thanks for the replies! I will ignore that one then. [smirking for

Hi.

Is this error something to worry about quickly (will have to buy a new
HDD if it is urgent. but they are expensive due to Thailand's flood )?

Device does not support Selective Self Tests/Logging

So I decided to run gsmartcontrol v5.41 (GUI version of smartctl) and it
also marked Power_On_Hours as a problem. I ran a long test and it
started with loud noises (a fan/motor or something spinning?) for about
30 seconds. That doesn't sound good to me. Anyways, here is the report
after the long test which said no errors/problems:

# smartctl -a /dev/sdb

Default "Failed SMART usage Attribute: 9 Power_On_Hours."?

put finger to keyboard and composed:

Other attributes look good, even after 64880 hours (7+ years)
uptime :-)

My Fujitsu 20GB HDD exceeded its POH threshold long ago. It still has
no reallocated or pending sectors.

Hi.

Is this error something to worry about quickly (will have to buy a new
HDD if it is urgent. but they are expensive due to Thailand's flood )?

Though the drive is apparently still good...
it does have a lot of hours on it.

I don't know what the flood in Thailand did ...but I just checked NewEgg
and you can get a new hard drive for about 100USD or so.

I'd consider replacing it...but I don't think you have to rush.

OTOH: As long as all your data are backed up
and you keep it backed up. no need to worry

It is usually the belief that prices will rise and the rush to buy
that pushes the price up, not the actual shortage.

This happened with rice prices in 2008.

Yes, but those same hard drives you see for $100 were just $59 weeks ago.

Can you blame the multinational corporations for gouging consumers
on the artificially inflated prices when they have management bonuses
and stockholder dividends to pay?

Remember, it is not the material and manufacturing costs which affect
so much the final price, but what the market will bear -- ie what
walk-in traffic will pay for convenience because they "want it now".
