Default Installing Second O/S

TravelMate 8100 with XP Pro

I have a 100 Gb. HD split into C: and D: drives. I only use the D: drive for
backup purposes but would be interested in turning this system into
dual-boot with Linux.

Has anybody any experience with this .. are there drawbacks ... or ...

The D: partition is Acer's backup drive/partition. When you use eRecovery
to create a image for backup in case of system failure, that is where it is
put. If you put Linux there your drive format will not be compatible.

In addition, you will want to go to support.Microsoft.com and search on
"dual boot" to obtain instructions on how to set up a multi-boot system.

The rest is up to you.

Hi David,

if you're a first time Linux user, I recomend Ubuntu (Gnome desktop) or
Kubuntu (KDE desktop, looks more like Windows). Also, you might want to
take a look at the LiveCDs of those distributions (www.ubuntu.com). You
can check if they run fine on your machine, i. e. recognise and access
all you hardware. The LiveCD adds an icon to the desktop which lets you
install the system on your harddisc.

There is no real big problem to install Linux, as its installer will ask
you where to create the necessary Linux formated drives. Choose drive D
(now called hda5) and resize it (a Linux system needs about 5 -
10 GB). The rest will be done by the installer.

When finished, let your system do an automatic update (fast
Interent connection is necessary) and you're done.

Good luck and have fun with Linux.
Martin
