Default NEC DVD Disk Drive Not Recognizing Inserted Disks

I have had an NEC 4550 DVD writer for 6 months or so that's never given me
any problems until recently.

It won't recognize some of the disks I insert and I can't pin down what's
causing it. I get a monthly magazine which has a dual sided DVD Cover Disk
and on the A side -which is mostly applications- it won't read any data on
the disk, but I can open the volume in Explorer, which -strangely- it shows
as an empty folder. On the B side -which is mostly game demos- it will
recognize the disk and autorun. I can't see enough of a difference between
the 2 sides to see what might be causing it. The interface is presented as
a Macromedia Projector Exe

At first I thought it was a problem with the production of the disk but now
I've come to suspect that it's something between the OS and the Disk itself,
some driver or program or something. I'm able to watch, rip and burn all
kinds of DVD's & CD's without any problems, but nothing I can think of to
try or application to use to access any of the data on the A side of the
recent Cover Disk's works. It also seems to be somewhat choosy, in that it
sometimes does recognize a disk, although never one it has previously failed
to recognize.

Anyone have any ideas ?

What does it do?

Make it the master on the secondary IDE channel.

Run POST and make sure its in the device list.

There is a long (15 sec) delay from the time a driver tries to access
an NEC DVD burner, so be patient.

Depending on the way you open a disc, if it is empty you can get error
messages, so make sure something is on the disc.

Check the disc with Nero CD-DVD Speed. Use the Scan utility on the
right side tab.

No need to. CD-DVD Speed is third party. Nero sticks is a rebrander.

According to the CD-DVD Speed website:

A comprehensive user guide of Nero CD-DVD Speed can be found at
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=192563

There is also a manual of sorts at:
http://www.cdspeed2000.com/files/CDSpeed_eng.chm

In addition there is a Help - Manual button on the application tool
bar, which is the same manual above.

Bob

Thank you. Helpful stuff, especially http://club.cdfreaks.com/ I'll have
to take the time to work through that before I understand it.

Changing around the Master\Slave on the Secondary IDE channel hasn't
miraculously improved things, unfortunately, but it was worth a try.

(I'm amazed Ronnie Reagan said that.)

Anyway, still tinkering away...

Thanks for your help

yours

Nick

Pretty good Bob; I knew he had a sense of humour, just didn't think he had a
sense of irony about US politics.

Cheers
