Default Purchase Suggestions For Inexpenive Text Only Printer ?

Hello,

First, thanks to everyone with the eplies as to why my old R200 Epson
wouldn't work (anymore).
Appreciate the help very much.

So, I would like to ask now for a suggestion for a new home printer,
hopefully inexpensive ($ 100 or so),
Black text printing only.

Would be used for perhaps two dozen text pages per week, so I guess this
would be considered
as light home printing. Have no need for color.

One of the Brother laser printers, perhaps ?
Has Brother proven to be a relaible brand for their cheap(er) printers ?

BTW: for these Brother laser printers, how does the print per sheet and
cartridge costs compare to the ink jet ones from Canon, HP, or Epson, in
general ?

Any suggestions and thoughts on would be most appreciated.
Again, no more than about $100, if possible.

Thanks,
Bob

I have no experience with cheap laser printers. The $600+ Lexmarks I've used
at work for the past four years have worked wonderfully. I went to
Newegg.com where some folks, including myself for years now, write in their
biased or unbiased reviews of the merchandise they purchase.
The link below is for laser printers and you may glean a little insight.
In other words, take the information for what it's worth. Just like this
newsgroup, some folks try to be objective, others are out to sell their own
wares, and some are simply out for blood.

Since your needs are so minimal, why not try to find a used printer at
the thrift store, garage sale, or Salvation Army? The going price in
my area is from $5-10. I saw a new Canon in the box for $10 including
carts. People get these printers in a package with new computers and
prefer to keep the one they had. Just a thought anyway.

Hi Robert,

For your needs, you are by far best to stay away from inkjet models.
Monochrome laser printers can be found for free in many locations on
services like Craig's List or Freecycle.org.

These will tend to be older, and therefore larger and heavier models,
but many of those can have their toner cartridges refilled quite
inexpensively, and the printers are usually quite ruggedly built.

Most of the older Canon, HP, IBM/Lexmark, and some Brother, Xerox and
rebranded versions of those brands of laser printers still have drivers
available for even current Operating Systems because they were so
common. Sicne yuo principally need yours for black and white text
printing, you do not require a very feature-right driver, so even some
of the generic drivers in XP and Vista (for example) may have the
features you require.

If you would rather go with a newer option, many black and white laser
printers are available for sale for under $70. These are smaller,
lighter, often faster, but they also tend to come wit starter toner
cartridges which are only 1/2 to 1/3rd full. This means they may only
print about 600 standard typed pages from one cartridge. Some of these
cartridges are refillable, many are designed with chips, like most
inkjet printer cartridges, to not work when refilled unless the chip is
replaced (cost between $5-20 per chip).

Still, even with these printers, your saving will be substantial over
inkjet printers, since toner cartridges don't clog, and toner tends to
remain good for many years, so there is little waste. They tend to be
faster than inkjet printers, and the toner is very fade and water resistant.

Laser printers do use a light sensitive drum or belt that will
eventually need replacement, but usually not before 10-20 thousand of
copies, so the printer will likely give you good value.

I recommend using a laser printer for text only applications, since they
are designed for black and white document creation and are more
efficient with consumables.

No particular suggestion, but...
Laser will never have a print head clog up.
Look for the weekly specials in the Sunday paper.
I recently got a 119 Brother for 69 after discount and rebates.
