Default Advice About DVD Burners Please

Hi,

I need some advice about DVD Burners

I am thinking of getting a DVD burner but am unsure about what type.
Could you give us a run down of the sorts of DVD and which sort is best.
Any advice on a recommended drive would help.
Also could I fit a CD RW as well as a DVD RW.

Any other advice would be appreciated

Thanx

you should get a dual layer 16x, I like the NEC 3520a.
go here for pricing and other models www.pricewatch.com
I also like Nero for burning along with dvdshrink and dvdcryptor.
the last two are freeware.

I agree with the dual layer, seeing as it doesn't seem to impact the price
significantly. I like my LiteON, but it is only a single layer. Came with
Record Now which I like very much, particularly the bundled MyDVD which does
an adequate slide show for me.
Note however, the cost of double layer media is still high and less easy to
find. DVD media is getting almost as cheap as CD.
I don't normally copy movies, but did evaluate the two freeware items
quoted. They seem to work as advertized and you can't beat the price! Of
course the whole point of DVD Shrink is to avoid having to use dual layer. I
wouldn't pay a lot more for 16x and don't recall seeing any 16x media, but
that will change.

16 x and DL are easy to find. DL is costly about 10 x the price of 8x/16x
discs
Not worth the cost just to save having two discs in a case

Any of the latest 16x DVD burners should be capable of burning all the
major formats (except for DVD-RAM). That includes:

DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, CD-R, CD-RW.

So there's no real need to install a separate CDRW drive, unless
you've misplaced the plastic cover on the case and don't want your PC
to have a "toothless grin".

NEC, Pioneer, LG, and Plextor are the most trouble free.

BenQ isn't too bad, but only if you've got a power supply that
performs within spec. If your power supply can't supply enough power,
or can't do it reliably, the drive will behave strangely, and produce
coasters. The problem is difficult to track down, so if you've got a
cheap marginal power supply and aren't sure about the PSU's quality,
best to steer clear of BenQ's DVD drives, or replace your PSU with a
better one (might want to do that anyways if you're using a crappy
one). This applies to NuTech, and Philips drives as well, because
they're the same drive.

LiteON has been improving, but still has some glitches with media
compatibility and burn quality. The brands it burn well, it burns
very well, but they seem to have trouble recognizing some brands of
media (even some fairly common name brands). If you buy one, check
out their recommended media list before buying discs. You should do
this no matter what drive you buy, but it's more important with LiteON
drives than some of the others.

----------------------
There are exceptions to what I wrote above though.

1. The LG drives are "SuperMulti" drives, so they'll burn all the
above AND DVD-RAM.

2. Pioneer, and NEC have announced "SuperMulti" drives of their own
that will be released by years end, so if DVD-RAM is important to you
either wait, or buy an LG if you can't wait. If you need DVD-RAM
support, you'll know. If you don't, or aren't sure, you won't need
it.

3. There are some oddball drives from DELL and Compaq that were custom
made to lack DVD-R and DVD-RW support to try and sidestep the
licensing fees. Likely won't be an issue as you *should* only be able
to get them as part of a computer from DELL and Compaq. Trouble is,
some people put the drives on Ebay upon finding out about the missing
features, so a few are "in the wild".

I've owned 5 CD/DVD burners in my life, but the LG4163, my newest one, is
clearly the best of the bunch. It will it burn anything, even DVD-RAM. It
also seems to have less trouble ripping damaged originals. It comes with
Nero Express and Cyberlink Multimedia.

I bought it to transfer mp3 music files to DVD-R. I haven't tried it with
video files yet, but I suspect it will be excellent there as well.

Agreed, except I'd say the NEC 3540A now

If you're in the US, keep an eye on newegg, they have it on "sale"
every now and then.

And as far as Liteon goes, well, lets just say I bought 3 of them and
I've retired 2 of them with NEC burners...*much* better burn
quality, and media compatibility, and that's not just IMO, that's fact.
