Default Canon ip1800 problem -port in use

I seem to be able to get only one print job per boot up. On the second try,
I get a message that the "Port is in use. Please wait". The only way to
get things to work is to boot up between print jobs. Any suggestions?

How is this printer connected? To your PC on a USB cable, or on a
network...?
