what motherboard in 5700T ?
I have a compaq Presario 5700T - and my bios accidently got wiped out (have
to get a new bios-chip) So either I should try to find out what bios it uses, then see if anybody have that specific bios-chip, and then change the bios myself. Or i should try to identify the motherboard exactly , and then order a new motherboard (compaq themselfes can't tell me what motherboard it is), and then change the entire motherboard. I'm just afraid that i can't get the exact same motherboard (its of extreme importance - since my recovery-cd probably won't work if its not entirely the same motherboard). In other words : what motherboard does the 5700t model use? and what bios-chip does it use? Thanks in advance. Martin |

Here is the part number of the systemboard in the 5700T....136109-102.
Compaq wants $320 for it, though. Try the Parts link in the Compaq FAQ, reposted weekly to this NG. HH "M" wrote in message ... Out of curiousity, how did that happen? Do you know for a fact that the BIOS chip is in a socket, not soldered on the systemboard? I do wish you luck in getting another chip, but my impression has been that these are as hard to find as hens teeth for Compaq PCs... Dale |

So i'm quite sure the bios got "wiped" :-). Do you know for a fact that the BIOS chip is in a socket, not soldered on the systemboard? What do you mean with that? Does it mean that it will be impossible to change one self? - or will it maker very hard to change or something? I do wish you luck in getting another chip, but my impression has been that these are as hard to find as hens teeth for Compaq PCs... Thanks :-) - but with that remark, i guess i might as well give up... Maybe i should just upgrade to a new computer - ...hey...lemme see... is it possible to change only the motherboard? - to another one that supports the current cpu (i think its a p3 550mhz if i remember correctly). That way i could also avoid changing the entire case and PSU. And i also like that the current "slow" cpu have no heat-issues like many newer one have..... In other words: maybe i should just find a motherboard that is in such way - that i ONLY need to change that, and JUST that! - will that be possible? (i know the recovery cd won't work anymore then, but i guess its possible to find the drivers manually on the net :-)). Any recommendations on other motherboards then? (to cut it out - if i decided to buy a very new board, i would have to change cpu too right? - and also i would maybe have to change RAM ... and probably a few other things i haven't thought of - oh - and the beforementioned case too probably ). Thanks again! Dale Martin |

HH Thanks for the ...number... i looked it up in google, and it sure as hell were some expensive things it found for me :-D Thanks though! It seems more and more that its a better solution to buy another motherboard (see my answer to "DEJ57") Martin "M" wrote in message ... As a side-note - what info should i give about my Compaq - so that various computer-shops would know which motherboards to offer me ? ( i mean, so the motherboard fits with the current case etc.) Atx case, and a p3 550 cpu - would that be enough info? Thanks again again. Martin |

Pull the battery out for about 30 mins...reinsert and boot up..try booting
from a floppy disk. "M" wrote in message ... BIOS updates are risky. If the flash fails it can leave your unit dead. All BIOS updates/upgrades I've seen warn you to only use the update if you have a serious problem that the update fixes, or at the instruction of the PC manufacturer. Do you know for a fact that the BIOS chip is in a socket, not soldered on the systemboard? What do you mean with that? Does it mean that it will be impossible to change one self? - or will it maker very hard to change or something? Some chips are soldered onto the board, and are reasonably non-replaceable. Some chips plug into square sockets, and can be replaced, if you can find a souce for the chip. I do wish you luck in getting another chip, but my impression has been that these are as hard to find as hens teeth for Compaq PCs... Thanks :-) - but with that remark, i guess i might as well give up... I may well be wrong--my experience has been somewhat narrow. But I thought it had been accurately reported in the NG that Compaq didn't sell BIOS chips, and I was unable sometime ago to find any source for a replaceable chip for a particular board in a Presario. Hope you prove me wrong! I don't have any replacement board recommendations. Sorry. Dale |

But doesn't removing the battery, only reset the bios-settings?
Remember that the bios is totally dead - and need to be replaced. A BIOS reset will cure some of the strangest problems. While a long shot in this case, it might work, and would be a simply fix compared to getting a new BIOS chip or systemboard. Its worth a least a try. Dale |

As a link to one possible source for either a chip or a motherboard:
www.epcusa.com. A seller of used business machines and components. They have a ton of Compaqs at their store here. KC "M" wrote in message ... "DEJ57" wrote in message ...
