Default Used Laser Printers? Where?

In a recent thread ("Black only Printer") several posters suggested buying a
used commercial laser printer. (I use only a fairly small number of b/w
prints).

Would anyone know where I might find a used laser printer? I can't find any
in our weekly computer magazine in this area. (San Diego).

I suppose the best brand would be HP?

Ebay would be a good source. Just make sure it comes with a decent warranty.

Most universities have a surplus property sale or auction.
Buy two or three printers, all the same model etc. Whichever one works you have
two for parts. I have 3 each HPIIIDs.( A HPIII is nice and reasonably fast.
Lots of parts and support available.) One for use and two for standby. They all
work.

Get out the classified pages of the phone book and start calling people
who do printer repair.

Talk to them....
Ask them if they sell used printers or know who does... especially if
they have friends who do sell them.

Look in the classified ads in the newspaper. There is generally a
section on used computer equipment.

I have forgotten the name of the "Used Goods" weekly tabloid magazine
commonly found in convenience stores such as "7-11" and the like. There
is usually a large listing of used computer stuff. I think they have
online selling too.

Yeah, It is from the same people who have a tabloid on Used Cars.

Several years ago, I sold a half dozen used laser printers through that
tabloid.

The folks who buy ads in the local computer magazine, that you probably
get free, make their money from selling new equipment. And, because so
much of the sponsorship of the magazine is from new equipment dealers,
there won't be much emphasis on finding used bargains....

It's hardly worth doing when you can get a nice Samsung 1710 for $99 after
rebate. It has excellent print quality and is very compact. HP also just
came out with the 1012 for low-volume users such as yourself. It goes for
about $150.

An interesting idea. I looked up the HP 1012 laser printer. It sells for $
150.

However, it seems to create the same trap as the inkjet printers: The toner
cartridge sells for $ 70 and is good for only 2000 pages.

With an Epson inkjet you get 1000 pages (b/w) out of a $ 25 cartridge.

Am I missing something??

The choice really depends on what you print. If you do professional
business documents, laser is the only way to go due to sharp and crisp text
with no bleeding. If you need any type of color, you'll have to go inkjet.

I have purchased several used computers and one laser printer (HP $
plus) from retrobox. www.retrobox.com.

My experience has been very good with them. There was a problem with
the HP printer. The fuser unit went belly up after a few pages.
Retrobox offered to fix the printer at there shop or send me the unit
and I could make the replacement. I elected for the latter and it went
well with their hand holding.

I would recommend them highly but shipping to the west coast may be a
problem.

There is a similar place in San Francisco. I will try to find their
address.

EBay is the best place. Start by deciding what make and model you
want, and what options you need. Then just keep searching until you
find a good one. It may cost money to have it shipped, but you can get
used printers so cheap on eBay that it's still cheaper than what you
usually have to pay for a local one.

I bought my last two laser printers on eBay, and I buy all my toner
and other supplies there as well. The lasers now have 1.2 million and
700,000 copies on them, and are going strong.

There are a couple places that I know of:

www.secondwindpcs.com - sells off lease equipment. Very nice company.
Cleans & checks just about everything they sell in my experience.

www.RTRtech.com - Just met Todd through an eBay deal. Very helpful in
getting me the righ tmemory for my laser. Sells refurb equipment.

Electronics Super Center - 866-805-2786 - Does off lease buyouts &
remarketing. He does shows all over the country, so you MIGHT be able to
arrange a local pickup. Based in Michigan. Give 'em a call

Stomp at your local computer show. There is usually someone there selling
off lease gear - or knows someone who is.

Auctions - GREAT place to get office lasers, but you take chances on DOA
gear. I've seen HP4's go for $10 each. Keep an eye in your classifieds for
office equipment auctions or municipal auctions.

www.ebay.com - good source of used printers.
